Labyrinth of Cinema Simon Abrams. The Rescue Roxana Hadadi. Tautou is a fascinating, unsmiling, petite presence with a severe brow and an androgynous appeal, so much so that I wish Alessandro Nivola Junebug were a more robust beau as Arthur ''Boy'' Capel, the love of Chanel's life. The movie is most fascinating when it shows how Chanel communicated her enlightened sense of womanhood through her innovative designs, which in turn helped women feel differently about themselves.
Wesley Morris. I could have watched this woman rip a piece fabric and turn it into a dress all day. I have seen movies about a woman caught between two men, as Chanel is here. Empire Liz Beardsworth. Kyle Smith. The movie is neither an affecting romance Coco even considers marrying Balsan because "I'd achieve social status" nor an inspiring success story. Chanel sold herself to one guy, happened to get customers through him, and took a start-up loan from another lover.

Probably one of my fifty favourite films by a female director. The film grew over its course as she herself bloomed I really enjoyed this. The film grew over its course as she herself bloomed and gained more self-confidence, and was a sumptuous delight with ravishing and inspired performance by Audrey Tautou.
Beautiful to look at and with wonderful soundtrack too, showing the multi-faceted beauty, both inside and out, of the amazing French woman. She is always watchable, gorgeous and fervently likable--and was a fine choice to do the portrayal. This was Important in showing that she was nobody's wife, mistress or fool, and was one of the best in coming from awful circumstances which could have crippled others, but through discovering and believing in herself became an icon without peer.
Eventually she moves up and meets people of influence the two always go together, don't they? What makes the movie interesting is Chanel's relationships with other men, two in particular, and in the general libertine scene she found herself joining, if not always liking. She does find love, maybe twice one more paternal, replacing the father who abandoned her as a child.
And all three male actors are spot-on believable. As is Tatou. The whole affair is interesting but with little magic or surprise. It's well made and well paced and you won't get drowsy, but expect a routine exploration. And learn something about a truly self-made woman who would change the look of the Twentieth Century, head to toe. FAQ 9. What is 'Coco avant Chanel' about? Is 'Coco avant Chanel' based on a book? Is the movie in English or French? Details Edit. Release date November 6, United States.
France Belgium. Warner Bros. France Warner Bros. I had to think whether it was possible to stick to the first period of her life, the training years, what had happened before Chanel herself understood her dazzling destiny. The other imperative condition was to fnd an actress to embody such a character, and not someone who would ape or make a pale imitation of Chanel. I found Chanel personifed in Audrey Tautou. On my first encounter with Audrey, I was struck by her will, her audacity, and the density of her gaze that goes through you.
Chanel looked at everything. Her culture was not one of knowledge, but a culture of observation. I had not yet written a single line of the screenplay when I met Audrey, but I knew that if she gave me her trust and if the production agreed to stick to the years of apprenticeship, I could then embark on the adventure of my first period movie.
